To provide tourists with location-aware information, automatic identification (Auto-ID) systems can be used. Although Auto-ID systems are widely used in logistics, commerce, and production, they still have a narrow range of applications in tourism.
This thesis deals with a new application of Auto-ID in tourism. Using mobile devices with an integrated radio frequency identification (RFID) reader, objects of interest, such as sights or buildings, that have been equipped with an RFID transponder can be identified. Upon identification, multimedia tourism-oriented information about the object is presented on the tourist’s mobile device.
