Stability Criteria of RED with TCP Traffic

This paper systematically shows the caveats of non-optimal RED parameter setting and evaluates a quantitative model how to set RED parameters as a function of the scenario parameters bottlenet-bandwidth, round-trip-time and number of TCP flows. Using this model, it is shown by simulation that properly configuring RED for bulk-data and web-like TCP traffic assuming knowledge of the scenario parameters is feasible and necessary. In order to show this necessity, the end-to-end performance decrease in cas of non-optimal parameter setting is investigated.
