2024 in review: From Data to Value
A successful year comes to an end. By using new technologies, knowledge, and expertise, we were able to contribute to a more sustainable future and offer solutions for today’s complex challenges. In 2024, in collaboration with our partners, we developed many new prototypes, algorithms, and recommendations for companies and the public sector in the following areas:
Smart Region & Mobility
With the help of vehicle movement data, we are working to support the mobility transition and increase the safety of vulnerable road users:
Safety of vulnerable road users:
- We ensured greater safety at complex intersections by precisely analyzing traffic movements.
- We investigated overtaking maneuvers between motor vehicles and cyclists with the help of the research bicycle and LiDAR sensors.
- In collaboration with partners, we developed scientifically founded recommendations for the safe and efficient integration of speed pedelecs (S-pedelecs) into existing traffic infrastructures.
Supporting the mobility transition:
- A research project aims to improve sustainable logistics in suburban areas.
- Together with partners, we are working on smart charging management for e-bus fleets.
- For the Wilder Kaiser region, we investigated how switching from diesel buses to emission-free e-buses could make bus transportation in the tourist region more environmentally friendly.
- Together with partners, we worked on facilitating climate-friendly travel to leisure and tourism destinations through digitalization.
Health & Sports
We used movement and sensor data collected from people to develop numerous innovations for greater safety and well-being at work, in old age and in sport:
Safety and well-being in the workplace:
- With the help of built-in sensors, an intelligent firefighter jacket protects firefighters from overheating and initiates the necessary countermeasures.
- Together with partners, we developed and tested a system for personalized stress management in a work context.
Safety and well-being in old age:
- The implementation of AI in our research work helped us develop an empathetic robot “Buddy,” that helps older people to overcome bad moods, motivation loss, and loneliness.
Safety and well-being in sports:
- With the help of sensor technology, we developed an algorithm for jump detection in skiing as well as a digital feedback system for sledding and also for equestrian sport.
Industry & Infrastructure
With our research work in the field of Industry & Infrastructure, we want to support the energy transition and ensure the quality and transmission reliability of communication networks, among other things:
Supporting the energy transition:
- A research project attempted to improve energy efficiency in data centers.
- Another project researched innovative energy management for more electricity autonomy.
- Together with partners, specific recommendations were developed on how local energy communities can be made more effective.
Quality and transmission reliability of communication networks:
- Since more and more wireless networks are significantly changing the characteristics of communication networks, we are developing a measurement system for performance and network quality in order to link security and communication solutions to protect people, buildings, and assets reliably and without interference.
Events and team spirit: a year that moves and connects
In 2024, we were once again in attendance at salz21 with a stand, side events, and on the main stage. We organized the Long Night of Research for our own research work and were also regional coordinators for the entire state of Salzburg. We were also active in sports again, among other things at the Charity Challenge; we enjoyed a wonderful company outing in Zell am See/Kaprun and successfully renewed our QM certificate in accordance with ISO 9001.
After a busy and innovative year, we are treating ourselves to a little break. On January 7, we will start an innovative year, 2025, with renewed vigor. As we do every year, we forego Christmas presents and instead support the Anna-Bertha-Königsegg-School for severely disabled children in Salzburg.
