Promotion Christoph Thorwartl

Doctorate of Christoph Thorwartl

Christoph Thorwartl was awarded a doctorate in natural and life sciences by the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg following a positive assessment of a cumulative dissertation consisting of 4 theses and 6 conference papers.

In his dissertation titled Sensor-Driven Examination of Alpine Ski Deflection: Lab and Snow Investigations, Christoph Thorwartl has presented an innovative sensor system that can be integrated directly into skis to precisely measure their movements and flexing behavior while skiing. Unlike existing technologies that are built into ski boots, this system, based on flexible PyzoFlex® sensors, provides valuable real-time data on skiing technique, performance, and the quality of turns. The developed technology could facilitate real-time feedback systems and personalized ski equipment in the future.

As part of the dissertation, an innovative prototype was developed and successfully validated in various test environments, from laboratory experiments to real conditions on the slopes, as part of the COMET project “DiMo”. The developed prototype technology is a promising candidate for the advancement of smart ski equipment, as it can validly and reliably detect the segmental and temporal curvature of the ski. The findings open up new possibilities for the further development of smart ski equipment, which could be used both in training and in the product development of skis.

We congratulate Christoph Thorwartl on this important milestone in his academic career!
