Climate-friendly traveling to holiday destinations through digitalization
Climate-friendly travel to leisure and tourism destinations by public transport is not always easy: the destination is often not accessible by public transport or is only accessible with great difficulty, and little is known about existing shuttle services. Salzburg Research and mobyome KG want to close this gap between public transport and tourist destinations through digitalization.
On the so-called last mile, i.e., from the last public transport stop to the actual destination, there are often no or no good connections. When searching for routes, many destinations result in an unreasonable walking distance, or the destinations are shown as inaccessible. At the same time, tourism associations, regions, local authorities, and individual accommodation providers do offer mobility services such as on-demand buses or guest shuttles. However, these are often only presented on separate websites or in information brochures and are not integrated into route information systems. A current research project by Salzburg Research and mobyome KG now aims to close these gaps in the system.
Closing the gap between public transport and tourist destinations
Salzburg Research and mobyome are developing solutions for how mobility offers in the areas of leisure and tourism can be digitized even without technical knowledge. To do this, existing micromobility offers for the last mile are collected, standards for the digitization of these offers are created, and software is developed to provide this data.
The aim is for tourism professionals to be able to digitize existing on-demand buses, guest shuttles and so on themselves and integrate them into route information systems. This provides travelers with comprehensive information for the entire travel route. The easier it is to access all routing data, the more likely travelers will be to use climate-friendly mobility.
The feasibility of this solution is being tested in two pilot regions, the Salzkammergut and the Nassfeld-Lesachtal-Weissensee region, from data collection to integration into a route planning system. Recommendations for action and framework conditions for implementation across Austria will be derived from the results of this testing.
The research project “DiToMo – Digitization of tourist mobility offers for the last mile” is funded by the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology as part of Mobility 2023 – Urban Mobility and Vehicle Technologies.
