The required reduction in CO₂ emissions requires alternative mobility concepts – especially in rural and urban areas. In the “EMotion” project, Salzburg Research is working with KTM Technologies, KTM AG, KISKA and other partners to develop new opportunities in the field of light electric mobility. Commuters in particular could use it to manage their commute in an environmentally friendly and cost-effective manner.

So far, e-mopeds have mainly been designed for inner-city traffic. However, their range is not sufficient, especially for commuters in rural or urban areas. New products are said to close the existing gap between electric mopeds and motorcycles. This is intended to make a significant contribution to achieving the emissions reduction targets set in the Austrian climate and energy strategy.

In addition to the areas of mechanics (weight reduction and maximizing range) and electronics (drive and battery system including control electronics), the challenges also lie in human-machine interaction: Innovative on-board information and interaction concepts should go beyond conventional switch and button-based operation. The interaction between vehicle and driver is also to be improved, among other things, using functional textiles. In addition, drivers should be motivated to drive in a sustainable and energy-optimized manner.

Salzburg Research is responsible for two areas of focus in the research project: Together with the Würzburg Institute for Traffic Sciences, we survey the needs and acceptance of users with regard to these new electric two-wheelers and the associated potential for interaction with the two-wheeler. We also organize and evaluate an 8-month field test in which users test the newly developed two-wheelers and determine their potential.
